09 BOCCE TOURNAMENT

By Ken Martin

TUTTI VENI: The Buon Tempo Italian-American Club Community-wide Open Bocce Tournament is coming up soon on Saturday, August 22. Competition starts at 9:00 AM at the new Adobe Park on San Miguel Avenue (roughly across the street from the firehouse). The entry list filled up quickly and 12 teams will compete for some great prizes like the trophies that were donated by Castro Valley’s own Engravit Trophies & Awards Shop and dinners at the Buon Tempo Club.

Even though no more teams can enter, everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the competition. While most of the teams are from Castro Valley, there are teams from San Lorenzo, Hayward, and San Rafael. You can pick your team and root for your favorite.

Some advice: For your comfort, bring your own chairs and shade. Neither of these is plentiful at the park. We hope to see you there.

GOOD TIME: The same above-mentioned Buon Tempo Club is an active social club based at the Castro Valley Moose Lodge. The club holds a family dinner each month and, later, a dinner for just the members. Every year it awards scholarships to deserving children of members (over $150,000 so far) and it  hosts the upcoming Open Bocce Tournament, has bocce four days each week, has an annual live opera night, an annual picnic and bocce tournament (not the Open Tournament), a childrens’ Christmas party, two crab feeds annually, participates in San Leandro’s Sausage & Suds Festival and the Rowell Ranch Rodeo parade and is planning various new events in the future. Recently the members raised $3000 to aid the Italian earthquake victims. It is a small club that offers great camaraderie to its members. It truly offers what its name says - a good time!

Memberships are now open to men of Italian descent (one parent or grandparent) and non-Italian men that are interested in becoming involved in and promoting the Italian culture. For more information and to get a more complete overview of this great club, please go to their website at www.buontempoclub.org.

Like they say on the TV commercials “BUT WAIT!” Buon Tempo membership also includes membership in the Castro Valley Moose Lodge and Buon Tempo pays the dues. Here is an opportunity to get two organizations for the price of one. An absolute bargain!! And this is the only Italian-American club in a convenient location to serve members in Southern Alameda County. The website has complete instructions on how to get a membership application.
