SHOW TIME: It’s Spring and with it comes car shows.
Locally, the Castro Valley Moose Lodge is holding its annual Classic Car Show & Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, June 16, in the parking of the Lodge on Rutledge Road. The show, which is open to custom cars up through 1969 models, starts at 11 AM and runs to 3 PM with the chili cook-off taking place at 1:30. If you’re not a chili fan, hamburgers, hot dogs, and beverages will be available all during the show.
The entry fee is $10.00 and is limited to the first 50 cars. Cars must be pre-registered to be judged. First and second place awards will be given in each class.
If you want to make a complete day of it, the car show will be followed that evening by a spare rib dinner featuring live entertainment by Michael and the Blue Suedes. Dinner and the show are $25.
This is a nice fun low-key event highlighting the works of local car builders. For car show information call Bill Kling at (510) 537-8293. If you want to enter the chili cook-off, call Pat Flanagan at (510) 459-6177.
HOP ON YOUR PONY: The Castro Valley based Bay Area Mustang Association is co-hosting, along with the Diablo Valley Mustang Association, the Wild West Mustang Nationals at the Concord Crowne Plaza Hotel on June 21 – 24. This is sponsored by the Mustang Club of America and will probably be the largest gathering of Ford Mustangs in the country this year. Events include cruises, a Pony Drive up Mount Diablo, judged and non-judged Mustang displays, social events, speakers, and a Hoedown and Banquet. Vendors selling all kinds of goodies for Mustangs will be on hand. 350 Mustangs are expected to attend from all over the country. Also scheduled is an opportunity for Mustang car owners to have their cars photographed with P-51 Mustang airplanes.
If all this sounds good to you, go to for more information or, for a more personal touch, call Stan Edington at (510) 247-1717. If you already aren’t excited from reading this, a short talk with Stan will quickly get you pumped.
AND MORE: If you want more car saturation, visit the K-Mart/OSH/Elio’s Restaurant parking lot on the southwest corner of Washington Avenue and Floresta Boulevard in San Leandro on the evenings of the second or fourth Thursdays of each summer month. Featured here are an eclectic collection of hot rods, custom and sports cars, and an occasional real race car. Admission is free. If you have a car that you want to show, just drive in and Don Periera will find a parking spot for you, no charge. It’s another low key fun happening.
FOR THE ITALIAN CONNECTION: The Alfa Romeo Association meets at Ricky’s Bar & Grill, 15028 Hesperian Boulevard, San Leandro, on the first Wednesday of each month at 8 PM. The owners of these fine Italian cars participate in tours, shows and rallys as well as annually attending, en masse, the historic car races at Laguna Seca in August. For information call President Michael Pordes at (707) 864-1066.
