IT’S TIME TO “LIGHT” UP: One of my favorite and most unique events is coming up this Thursday, October 22, starting at 7 PM. It’s the sixth annual “Light the Lights” concert at Redwood Chapel. This is a fundraiser for the CV Center for the Performing Arts, just across the road from the chapel. All the funds collected go to operating and improving our beautiful Center.

The highlight of this series is seeing the CVHS Orchestra along with the CVHS Choir, both resplendent in all of their finery. They are beautiful visually and they sound even better. In addition, the amazing choirs from Canyon and Creekside Middle Schools will add another measure of enjoyment to the program. The kids alone are worth the price of admission, but wait (as they in the TV ads), there’s more!

The entire evening, emceed by TV personality and CVHS alumna Julie Courtney, is a tribute to the music of the bayou country of Louisiana.  The featured performers will be Tom Rigney and  Flambeau doing New Orleans Jazz, gospel, Cajun, and zydeco music. Rigney, the son of baseball great Bill Rigney, is a Bay Area native and the holder of many prestigious awards for his music.

This will be a great show. Everyone ought to be there, especially the CV residents that complain about nothing going on in Castro Valley. This is definitely something going on! For tickets, go to the website at

EVERYONE CAN HELP: You may have read the article in last week’s Forum about the proprietor of Lee’s Donut’s on Redwood Road who was robbed and brutally beaten by some “upstanding citizens” of our community. He was severely injured and now has some huge medical bills. Although he apparently has some insurance, there is a huge five-figure deductible outstanding.

At last week’s Chamber Mixer a group of Chamber members decided to form an ad hoc committee to raise funds to help the victim cover this cost. You will be hearing more about this effort shortly so stay tuned and please be prepared to help. More details later.
