I TOLD YOU SO!: When I ceased writing these columns on a regular basis I said that, if I found something to write about, I’d be back. So here I am.

OPERA IN CV: “Una Notte di Bella Canzone”, a night of beautiful song, will be presented by the Buon Tempo Italian Club on Saturday evening, September 13 at the CV Moose Lodge. The show, to follow a great Italian dinner, will feature the world-class singers from the Oakland Lyric Opera Company performing arias and songs from the great operas.

Wendy Loder, soprano, will join Raeeka Shehabi-Yagmai, mezze-soprano, Jorge Gomez, tenor, and Leland Morine, baritone, doing selections from operas by Verdi, Bizet, Puccini,  Mozart, and other great composers. All of these singers have performed world wide and are rated tops in their profession.

The five course dinner and the show are a bargain $30.00 per person. Cocktail hour starts at 5:30 PM with dinner at 6:30 and the show at 7:30. To make reservations, send a check in the exact amount to Opera Night, c/o Jim Pineo, 47 Georgia Way, San Leandro, CA 94577. Only paid reservations will be accepted. For information only, call me at (510) 727-9296.

Seating is limited and last year’s performance sold out quickly. The show ended with a standing ovation that demanded three encores and left the audience calling for more. This year’s presentation promises to be even better. If you like opera (or just beautiful voices) at all, be there!

THINGS ITALIAN: I mentioned the Buon Tempo Italian Club above. This is an Italian-American social club that is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year. Its activities include twice-monthly dinners, an annual picnic and bocce tournament, weekday bocce, an opera night (see above), two annual crab feeds, scholarship awards, and involvement in various other Italian cultural events.

While its membership consists mainly of men of Italian descent, the roster includes a percentage of members of non-Italian heritage.  As the name states, the primarily purpose of the club is to promote “good times” for its members. Its main base of operations is at the Castro Valley Moose Hall. An additional perk includes membership in the local Moose Lodge that is included in the Buon Tempo dues at no extra charge.

Anyone interested in joining can get more information by calling president Paul Grazzini at (510) 633-3015.

E PIU ITALIANO: The Castro Valley Adult School is offering classes in the Italian language starting September 20. Three levels – Italian I, II, and III – will be taught. I have already enrolled and it should be fun. My main reason for wanting to learn the language is that I play bocce at the Fratellanza Club in Oakland. Frequently I am the only person on the court that doesn’t speak Italian! I consider the Italian classes to be a self-defense course!!

To get information or to enroll in the classes, go to the Adult School office at 4430 Alma Street, CV, or call (510) 886-1000. You can also enroll on line at www.cvadult.org.
